Clearing ice

  • One challenge that many people face is clearing ice from their properties in the winter. I like to approach this in several steps. First, I use a plastic shovel to remove easy-to-remove snow from an area. Next, I use a mattock to scrape off further snow or ice. If clients don’t mind it, I will use the mattock to gently pry away packed snow and ice. If they are worried about scratching the stone underneath, I will only use the tool to scrape the top layer of snow and ice and try to minimize touching the area underneath entirely. Next, I apply a thin layer of rock salt to the entire area. I return the following day to repeat the process until all ice is cleared or no longer constitutes a slip hazard.

Snowblower vs. shovels

  • I find that work is completed faster with a plastic shovel rather than a snowblower. However, in terms of sheer laziness and back pain, I strongly prefer snowblowers. They allow for snow to be moved with less effort and do far less to trigger back injuries.
