Interlock Paver Weeding

Service details: scraping or weedwhacking interlock, paving slabs, and asphalt

Weedwhacking vs. scraping out?

  • Doesn't really matter, they're coming back anyways. Scraping out creates more instability in the paving system but also produces a cleaner result for a longer time

How often should I do this?

  • Whenever they spring up, the more frequently, the better. The more frequently you pull them out and the smaller they are when you do so, the less time they have to develop root systems and the less energy they have to regenerate after being partially pulled out (if they're perennials)

How do I reduce my maintenance time with this task?

  • Polymeric sand application (I do this, though at the moment I don't have a brand that I can swear amazing results by)

  • Herbicide application (I don't do this; in Ontario you're not legally supposed to be using herbicides other than Fiesta, and that stuff isn't too effective). RoundUp is available if weeds are noxious (poison ivy, etc).

  • Installation of new hardscaping after new base preparation (I may do this, depending on the size and complexity of the scope of work).

Garden Bed Weeding

Service Details: weeds are pulled out of garden beds by hand. Some fragments inevitably are left behind during this process.

Can you remove weeds by their root systems?

  • I prefer not to because it slows work down considerably. But, if clients request it and the weeds are perennials that would benefit from maximal root system removal, then I will do this.
