Concrete work

Concrete slab pouring

Review of mistakes made when pouring concrete:

  1. Mixing cement and water in a wheelbarrow: the wheelbarrow fell apart during the work (tire wasn’t tight enough) and mixing was stressful and time consuming. If the area was any bigger or I worked any slower, I would’ve been screwed.

  2. Slope and forms: the only way I knew how to produce the correct slope was to use forms and adjacent concrete to produce the levelling effect, but this was difficult due to the presence of the stairs on one side and the existence of plumbing cleanout pipes. The correct slope was produced, but it was still uneven which led to a deformed look to the final project

  3. The color: the final color of the finished project appears to be exceptionally white. I don’t know if this is normal, but I doubt it. I’m not entirely sure about the cause of the discoloration, and I was not able to address this issue before the project concluded.

  4. Uneven heights and corners: incorrect placement, levels and heights of concrete along with incorrect positioning of forms caused this job to look uneven. For the client’s purpose, it's better than a hole in the ground, but from the perspective of professional concrete work, this is shabby.

Concrete sealing

An issue with the concrete sealing project on the side:

  • In this project, I had to seal the concrete on the front porch. Structurally, this should be fine, the correct product was applied and the surface is waterproof. Aesthetically, this job required multiple applications of paint stripper and sanding to remove the existing layer of paint (I sanded some of it to remove any immediately peeling pieces) before sealing should’ve been done. But, the client was satisfied with the less expensive job.
