Paver work

Paving Slab Walkway

Structural stability with paving slabs: All pavers should have at least 2 inches (ideally up to 4 or more) of crushed gravel and compacted underneath them. This base material counteracts the naturally destabilizing impacts of freezing and thawing that happens during Canadian winters and the flows of water on the property. My project on the right did not include the excavation and installation of crushed gravel base material, and is thus done incorrectly.

Two methods for cutting stone: If you want to avoid dust, and you've got time, take a chisel and mallet and score a shallow line along the stone you'd like to cut. A couple of hard whacks, and it should chip off more or less exactly where you want it to fall. Another way to cut stone is by using an angle grinder. This is a dangerous tool because incorrect pressure and blade selection can lead to disastrous results (blades break off and fly into people's eyes). a shield and a knowledge of the tool you're working with are essential. Also, you should have running water handy for dust suppression. Even an n95 mask cannot stop all of the airborne silica that is created through stone cutting.
